16 Days... Screwtape Letters

With 16 days left before we leave for Mexico, I wanted to discuss a book that is focused on spiritual warfare- but written from the perspective of an elder devil- Screwtape- writing letters to a younger devil- Wormwood. If you have never read this, I would highly recommend it.

One thing that strikes you as odd when reading these letters is the devils' usage of the term "Enemy" in reference to God, and the term "Father" referring to the devil himself. Over the next few days I will be posting letters from a different elder devil writing to his younger apprentices on how to combat mission trip teams! I wanted to get you accustomed to the style here, so you don't think I turned to the darkside! A few memorable quotes from the book are written below for today, as well as a neat sketch video, with one of the voices being that of Andy Serkis!

“Whatever their bodies do affects their souls. It is funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out...”

“The more often he feels without acting, the less he will be able ever to act, and, in the long run, the less he will be able to feel.

“When He [God] talks of their losing their selves, He means only abandoning the clamour of self-will; once they have done that, He really gives them back all their personality, and boasts (I am afraid, sincerely) that when they are wholly His they will be more themselves than ever.”

“By this method thousands of humans have been brought to think that humility means pretty women trying to believe they are ugly and clever men trying to believe they are fools. And since what they are trying to believe may, in some cases, be manifest nonsense, they cannot succeed in believing it and we have the chance of keeping their minds endlessly revolving on themselves in an effort to achieve the the impossible.”

“Above all, do not attempt to use science (I mean, the real sciences) as a defence against Christianity. They will positively encourage him to think about realities he can’t touch and see. ”
